My name is Maria D. Goldstein and I am the media specialist at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. I plan with teachers in order to develop integrated units, incorporating research skills to the objectives being taught by the classroom teachers. Among our most successful units are Terrestrial Biomes, The Stock Market Simulation Game, Immigration/Assimilation, Chaucer and his Time, Ancient India, and Genetic Disorders.
About the media center
Our media center is part of the Miami-DadeCounty Public School's wide area network(WAN). We have twelve computers and a teacher's workstation connected to the WAN. In addition, we provide access to the following databases: Magazine Article Summaries (MAS), Newsbank Newsfile, SIRS Researcher, SIRS Government Reporter, Contemporary Authors, and Miami-Dade County's Public Schools computerized card catalog, IMPACT.
Being connected to the wide area network has many benefits. In addition to having access to the Internet, we are able to add online databases at substantially lower costs. We plan to add Discovering World History and Discovering Science (Gale Research databases)this academic year.
In addition, we have eight stand-alone computers for multimedia applications. A mini-lab, consisting of twelve computers, six printers and a scanner will be added shortly. This mini-lab will be used to instruct students and teachers in the use of word processing , desktop publishing, and presentation applications.
