About Me

Welcome to my Homepage.
My name is Jean Rybicki and I am a teacher at Ludlam Elementary. I teach 4th and 5th grade Gifted Reading and Language Arts.

About My Classroom

I've just completed the teaching of a unit about wolves using a literature base of Kavik, the Wolf Dog, by Walt Morley, and Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George.

Next, I plan to teach a 4th grade unit about ancient Egypt in conjunction with the book, The Egypt Game, and a 5th grade unit about the Civil War along with a book entitled Charley Skedaddle.

Great WWW Educational Sites

I am very interested in meeting with other teachers who can offer ideas which will supplement the teaching of these units.

We are well known for our classroom pets, two bearded dragons (agamas) which the students refer to fonldy as Hillary and Bill. They love to feed, clean and play with these docile but fierce looking lizards. If parent permission is given, Hillary and Bill are allowed to have a vacation from the classroom and spend the weekends with students. In the future, we hope to have a little Chelsea, Socks, and Buddy -- but only if Hillary and Bill cooperate!

About Where I Live

I am a native Floridian, although my cousins in Michigan have more of a tan than I do! The weather in Miami ranges from warm to hot. The temperature often reaches 98°. If you ask me, the heat's not so bad, but the humidity is another story. Frizzy hair is a daily ordeal during the rainy season!

Other Stuff

I have two tabby cats. Bitsy was a Hurricane Andrew orphan. She is very skittish around strangers but loves to curl up on my lap whenever she gets the chance. I found Sparky while teaching summer school three years ago. He spent the day in my second grade classroom asleep under a desk. The children were very well behaved so as not to wake him. (What an effective behavior management technique!) Bitsy was anything but thrilled with the new addition to our family, but tried to make the best of it. Sparky now weighs eighteen pounds and thinks he rules the roost. He enjoys eating, playing in his water bowl, and sleeping in the sink. Both cats have access to the patio on a regular basis, but every chance he gets, Sparky races out the front door to make sure he's not missing anything.

Hamlet is the most recent addition to my family. He is a one year old roly-poly, highly-energetic little pug who enjoys taking me for walks, playing fetch, eating, taking long naps, and entertaining, or should I say antagonizing, the cats.

In the event that I have the luxury of free time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, cooking/baking, and working on counted cross-stitch designs. I've recently taken up the hobby of making stained glass. My first project, though not complete, is a sun-catcher of a moon and star. I also like bike riding, walking, and fishing.

Search engines are a great way to find useful information on the Web. One of my favorites is Education World.
