Welcome to my homepage. My name is Jodi Bolla and I am the Reading Coordinator at North Miami Elementary School. I am responsible for making sure the teachers in my shcool have the materials they need to successfully teach reading, writing and language arts. This year I plan to focus on streamlining the reading instruction at my school by tranning the teachers to utilize the CrISS strategies. The CrISS strategies are crtitical thinking strategies that can be infused into any lesson in any area of curriculum. Many of the strategies are ones already being used by teachers but CrISS will help to take critical thinking to the next level.
In addition to staff development and facilitation, I also lead a Teachers As Readers book group which meets once a month to discuss and share children's literature. We have over 30 active members who meet and share books addressing certain topics. Beginning in March we will be starting an Adult Book Club and will be reading Toni Morrison's newest book Paradise.
Dade County Public Schools has answered President Clinton's Challenge and has worked with a collition of higher education institutions headed by Miami - Dade Community College. These agencies worked to design a tutorial model which could be used in its school and improve the reading ability of its children. President Clinton's Challenge called upon the nation to mobilize and channel its efforts into making certain that all children ead well and independently by the end of grade three. The colleges and universities devoted Federal Work Study money to train, hire and pay college student to work using this model.
North Miami Elementary is also an official America Reads! school. We currently have 9 trained reading tutors which come from Miami - Dade Community College and work individually with First Grade children. These tutors fill a very wide gap and are serving to improve the reading ability of these first grade children. In December we celebrated the efforts of the tutored children their classroom the teachers and also the tuors. Over 100 children received concentrated and focused one-on-one tutoring! The teachers and tutors both recognized the improvement and cheered loudly for the devotion and dedication put forth for all involved parties!
