About me:

Welcome to my Homepage.
My name is Fern Brooker and I am a teacher in Broward County at Sawgrass Springs Middle School in Coral Springs, Florida. I am the Department Chair for Physical Education and Health. I've taught grades 6-8. I've been teaching in Florida for 12 years and am a recipient of the FAHPERD State awards for both Middle Grades Physical Educator and Middle Grades Health Educator. I began teaching elementary Physical Education in Illinois in the early 70's. I judged Girls Gymnastics for 17 years and have coached volleyball, soccer, and softball.

I am also a Pyramid Trainer for Multimedia and Reading. I'm on the school's Technology Team and teach my peers how to use technology in their classrooms. I am interested in meeting fellow Physical Education and Health Professionals and am willing to help any Reading teachers in using technology.

About my program:

I teach the following topics:

Archery, Basketball, Fitness, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, Golf, Ice Skating, Line Dance, Nutrition, Ping Pong, Racquetball, Soccer, Softball,Tennis,Track & Field,Volleyball, Weight Training, and Wellness.

This year I also plan on using journals for the first time. All my students are required to do one homework project. I give them a choice of topics and they can do their project from a variety of learning style choices.

Students wear black shorts and grey tee shirts with socks and sneakers for a uniform. Last names must be printed on the backs of their shirts. Periods are 58 minutes long and everyone is required to take a minimum of 9 weeks of physical education each year.

Where I work:

I work in South Florida where it is hot year round. My school is starting it's 3rd year and is a Magnet School of Environmental Science and Technology. We have the advantage of a gym, a weight room, two locker & laundry rooms, 2 softball fields, 2 basketball courts, 6 tennis courts, 6 racquetball courts, a track, outdoor garage for storage and a soccer/football field. We are located on Sportplex Drive which has a Golf Driving Range, Tennis Courts, Swimming and Diving Pools and an Ice Skating Complex. We also expect to have a Miniature Golf Course, National Softball Fields and Volleyball Courts, soon. In the school we have the use of one of the two computer labs if we want. There are 4 computers per classroom with at least one hooked up to the internet. Each teacher has a laptop computer. The media center has approximately 13 computers with internet access. My school also has a full time reading specialist and a technology specialist.

As a first year school, we won the Model Physical Education Award for Middle School Physical Education. We were presented a placque at Pro-Players' Stadium on the pitcher's mound, at the Marlin's game during their winning season.
