Sunshine State Standard

MA. Mathematics.B.3.2. Grades 3-5.1

Materials

double pan balances metric gram weights small paper cups various brands of bubble gum calculators (optional) AIMS Publication:Jaw Breakers & Heart Thumpers (Bubble Gum Activity)

What to do

This activity is titled "By Golly By Gum" as is from the AIMS book: "Jaw Breakers & Heart Thumpers". Each group of students (4-5) is given a different brand of bubble gum. Each group will find the mass of their unchewed gum and record it. Then each student (in each group) chews their piece of gum for at least 10 minutes. Students then again find the new mass of their gum and then calculate the % of sugar in each brand of gum. The AIMS activity has ready to use data collection sheets and graph sheets for student use. AIMS Educational Foundation can be located on the WWW at: www.aimsedu.org/ The website contains everything about the AIMS products including on-line ordering of their activity lesson books.
