Materials

One of the following books: The Cay by Theodore Taylor Night of the Twister by Ivy Ruckman or Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Internet Access Red Cross Representative, Local Weather.

What to do

Develop a questionnaire about a disaster that was faced by student. (car wreck, divorce, or natural disaster. Send questionnaire out on Kidsphere to get results and Graph experiences of others as to natural and man made. Get a class to participate with your as you read one of the books from the list. Do a pre-read prediction of what the book will be about with each key-pal. As a class read one chapter then formulate several questions to send to the key-pal, and send. Read e-mail from key-pal, answer questions then make predictions on next chapter. Continue in this manner until the book is completed.(Keeping an electronic journal about all thoughts and answers to questions is a great addition to the project.
