What to do
Create a T.V. literary show similar to that of Siskel and Ebert, instead you are reviewing books. First, you need to teach your students how to write a book report and/or summarized a story. Second, you need to establish criteria for your students to be on the show. Based on behavior and incentives, pick a host for the show. This can really help improve behavior, self-esteem, and increase reading interest. Next, have the host or hostess introduce the show. The host can change every week. You can incorporate several formats for the show to keep it interesting for all to watch and participate. Ideas: 1. Have children tell interesting facts of the story including if they liked or disliked the story without giving the ending of the story. The purpose of this is to persuade another child to read this story. 2. Have student pretend they are the author from the story that they read. Then have the host of the show interview them. 3. Include all grade levels by inviting each grade level to share or present books. 4. Invite the school Principal or Assisstant Principal to read their favorite story on the show. After they are finished reading their story they can explain briefly why they liked that book so much. 5. Have students act out a book or a scene from the book. The children who watch the show can write a paragraph deciding if they would be interested in reading that same book or not. These shows could be aired once a week on the school-wide T.V. network or could be available for check out in the library.
