Materials
slices of watermelon, whole watermelon, scales, yarn, yard sticks, sandwich bags, estimation/measurement booklets(teacher already has made)
What to do
Each student is given a slice of watermelon to eat. Seeds are taken out and put into sandwich bag without being counted. Students estimate the number of seeds and write the guess in their booklets. Then the actual number is counted and recorded. Next students estimate the weight of the whole watermelon and then place the watermelon on the scales. Record answers in booklets. Finally the students estimate the length and width of the watermelon in inches. Pieces of yarn that equal the length and width are cut and then placed on the yard stick to find the measurement.
Additional Information
Booklet covers can be made by cutting paper plates in half and painting to look like watermelons. After seeds have been counted, they may be glued on the covers. Fingerprints in black paint may also be used for seeds.
