Materials
pictures of butterflies, Eric Carle's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, collage materials (tissue paper, paint, markers, newspaper)
What to do
1. Engage in a brief discussion on metamorphosis 2. Read Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar 3. Pictures will be arranged in the order through which a butterfly undergoes metamorphosis. 4. Each posterboard picture will be looked at and discussed. During the discussion phase, words describing each stage will be written on the board. A handout will be given to each student. 5. Students will create their own butterfly. Eric Carle uses a cut and paste method known as collage. The students will be shown this method to create their picture. 6. On one day: Using various shades of tempera paint and combining the colors any way they wish, the students will paint a large sheet of white tissue paper.. Paint may be dripped, drizzled, or stroked with a large brush. The tissue paper is then placed over a slightly larger piece of manilla paper. Once the tissue is completely painted, separate the tissue from the manilla. Allow to dry overnight by placing both sheets on a newspaper-covered floor. Make sure their names are on both sheets of paper. 7. Next day: Newsprint (same size as manilla paper) is given to each student. Have students draw a large butterfly on the newsprint. 8. The butterfly is cut out from the newsprint. The pattern of the butterfly is placed on top of the painted tissue. Trace the pattern of the butterfly with a pencil. Remove the pattern and cut out the butterfly. 9. Glue the butterfly on to the manilla paper. Each butterfly created by the student will be unique and individual.
