How much is a foot?

Materials

Paper for each studentfolded into thirds. pencils for each student 1-12" ruler for each student

What to do

Read and discuss the book "How Much is a Foot?". Discuss non standard units of measure. List on chart paper all the objects (desk height and length, chair height, carpet area of floor, tile area of floor, etc.) students will measure with their own foot (shoe). After folding the paper in thirds, students will record object name and sizes according to their own foot in the first 2 columns of their paper. After all measurements are made gather to discuss the results. Pass out 12 " rulers to each child and have them measure the objects again and record their results in the third column of thier paper. Gather to share the results. Ask "Why is it important to have a standard (set)way to measure?"
