Fraction plates

Materials

4 different colored plastic picnic plates for each student in your class permanment markers scissors

What to do

Discuss the fact that numbers can be represented in a variety of equivalent forms. Students will use white plate to represent a "whole." Students will fold and cut blue plate in half to represent the fraction 1/2, then label each half. The green plate will be folded and cut into fourths to represent the fraction 1/4, then label each fourth. The red plate will be folded and cut into eighths to represent the fraction 1/8, then label each eighth.
