4 Index cards for each student 4 pieces of poster board

What to do

Teacher demonstrates with poster board while students use index cards. 1. Draw line on Poster board(index cards) both horizontally and veritically on one. Distance apart is determined by size of board(card). 2. Have students determine area by counting squares. 3. Show students that this is equal to length x width. 4. Take another piece of poster board(index card) and cut it in half diagonal. Show students that the area of a triangle is 1/2 l x w. 5. Take another piece of poster board(index card) and cut corner off of index card. Tape straight edge sides together forming a trapezoid. Show size has not changed so area is equal to rectangle which is length x width. 6. Take another piece of poster board(index card) and cut corner off of index card. Flip cut piece and tape straight edge sides together forming a parallellogram. Show size has not changed so area is equal to rectangle which is length x width
