Are You My Mother?

Sunshine State Standard

SC.F.1.1.4

Materials

sound jars - plastic film canisters work best..put objects into the canisters..be sure that there are pairs...for instance, have two canisters with paper clips in them, two with cotton balls, two with marbles, etc. smell jars - plastic film canisters with small holes in the top.. put cotton balls in each canister.. add a smell...example: vanilla flavoring, orange flavoring, peppermint,etc....be careful to add smells that are not so strong that they will be harmful to small noses...again, pairs are needed..Example: two canisters with vanilla, two with peppermint, etc. colored stickers dots...pairs...Example: two red, two blue, two yellow, etc.

What to do

As students enter the room or during roll call, give each student a sticker (colored dot). Remember that each dot given shuld have a partner dot somewhere in the room. Ask the students to leave the dots alone and that they will need them for a lesson later in the day. Read the book, Is Your Mamma A Llama?. Discuss with the students animal babies. Brainstorm a list of animals and their babies. Example: cow - calf; mare - foal; etc. Students should be directed to draw or write this list in a fact book to keep for future reference within a unit on animals, mammals, etc. Ask the question, How do animal babies know who their mother is? or How do animal mothers know who their babies are?Have the students find their partner by finding the matching colored dot sticker. Tell them to disscuss with their partner their ideas about the question. Gather students back in whole group and discuss findings. Guide the students to the conclusion that sight, sound, and smell are ways of identification for mothers and babies in the animal kingdom. Which way did they use to find their Mamma? The next morning have a smell jar for each student. repeat find activity. Which identification measure did you use to find your Mamma today? Are there other ways? The following day or later that day have the students use the sound jars to find their Mamma. Conclusion/Review Read, Are You My Mother? Discuss..list the behavior patterns of animals when identifying their offspring or Mamma. Have students add this information to their fact books.
