Materials
flashlight, globe or basketball, baseball
What to do
The flashlight is the Sun, the globe or basketball is the Earth, and the baseball is the Moon. Have a student shine the stationary Sun on the Earth and Moon. Have another student move the Moon around the Earth. Point out how the shadow of the Moon remains on the side opposite the Sun, and have students imagine viewing the Moon from the Earth. A Full Moon occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun. A New Moon occurs when the Moon is on the same side as the Sun.
