Density of Different Liquids

Sunshine State Standard

SC.A.1.3.6

Materials

water,alcohol,cooking oil,scale,graduated cylinder

What to do

1. Weight the graduated cylinder empty 2. Pour 50ml of water into the cylinder then weight the cylinder. Then subtract the weight of the empty cylinder from the weight of the cylinder with the water in it. 3. Use the formula density=mass / volume 4. Repeat steps 1,2,3and 4 using the alcohol and oil 5. Observe the different numbers you have for density. 6. Pour all three liquids back into the graduated cylinder or jar and let stand. 7. Observe and compare the liquids floating on each other by their density numbers.

Additional Information

Predict if an object will sink or float in a liquid by its density number.
