Who's Denser - Boys or Girls?

Sunshine State Standard

SC.A.1.3.1

Materials

Horse watering trough - (borrow from a farm supply store) Bucket - (marked with metric measurments) Bathroom scales Bathing suit and towel for each student volunteer.

What to do

Weigh each student and convert their weight (mass) into kilograms (2.2 lbs = 1 kg ). Fill the trough until it overflows. Have the student submerge themself and emerge very slowly trying not to make waves. Refill the trough using the metric bucket. The amount of water needed to refill the trough will equal the amount of water displaced by the volume of the student's body. Insert the data into the density formula (D=M/V) and have fun getting Soaked for Science!!!
