Materials
construction paper, lined notebook paper, pencil, scissors
What to do
After a lesson on symmetry, a fun way to apply (and integrate with Language Arts) is to make "Symmetrical Sillies". 1) Distribute sheets of 9x12 construction paper and demonstrate folding lengthwise. 2) Using scissors, cut along fold line in a random manner, beginning at one end of the paper, with some cuts being deeper than others, until the length of the fold line has been cut. 3) Open the paper up to display what is created, pointing out the symmetry of the figure. The figure cut out is your "Symmetrical Silly", a character ready to "flesh out" with a Language Arts activity, i.e. a descriptive writing assignment, including birthplace, relatives, favorite food, number of offspring, habitat, etc.
Additional Information
Language Arts: character development, paragraph writing Bulletin Board with same title: paste "Sillies" onto contrasting paper and display with character description.
