Materials
newsprint paper, variety of objects to measure in classroom, story "How Big Is a Foot?"
What to do
Read and discuss "How Big Is a Foot." Students will trace and cut out their foot on multiple copies of newsprint paper. Students will then use these non-customary units of measure to find the length of specific objects (desk, door, table, blackboard) around the classroom. These measurements will be recorded and then compared. Students will discuss why their measurements of the same objects are different. They will discuss the importance/use of a standard unit of measure.
