MA.B.3.1.1
Materials
an apple string scissors masking tape chart paper marker
What to do
1. Using a marker, write these headings on a large piece of chart paper (too short, just right, too long). 2. Have each student estimate and then cut the length of string it will take to go around an apple. 3. Each student then uses his/her piece of string to measure the circumference of the apple. 4. Tape each piece of string under the appropriate heading in which it fits. 5. Count the number of strings under each heading. 6. Examine and interpret the data.
Additional Information
Extensions to the lesson: * Estimate the number of seeds in the apple. Then, cut open the apple to count the number of actual seeds. * Plant the seeds and discuss the parts of a plant. * make a dish to eat using apples (apple pie, apple sauce, spiced apples, caramel apples). * Use the five senses to describe the apple. Do the same with two other fruits and then compare and contrast the descriptions. * Compare the circumference of an apple to other types of fruit. * Read about Johnny Appleseed.
