Materials
For each group of 3or 4 students: A set of manipulatives with a 1000 pieces such as: beans unpopped popcorn pennies cm.cubes 1 large sheet of newsprint or butcher paper 2 or 3 markers
What to do
Give each group a set of materials. Instruct them to use the materials to solve the problems. Students individually write an explanation of how they solved the problem in their Math Log. Each group verbally explains how they solved the problem. As each group explains their answer, write their method on the board or overhead. Some examples of what you may write are: 32 groups of 28 = 896 28 groups of 32 = 896 Extensions: You are likely to get many different answers. Discuss why. You may want to have students use a calculator to check their answers. MA.A.3.2.3 is also covered with this activity.
