What to do

1. Students identify rods by name and abbreviations

2. Students compare sizes

3. Set up control (for example) 2 w = 1 red
Ask the following: ratio of w to r
w is what percent of r
w has what correct call name (1/2)

4. With 5 w on the OH what would be there? (5 halves)

5. More examples

6. Expand to other rods, setting up different fractions

7. Introduce trading to make mixed numbers

8. Continue to challenge and change
