MA.B.1.3.1
Materials
string
graph paper
yard/metric sticks
What to do
1.Review with students the definitions of and formulas for finding the perimeter and area of rectangles.
2.State objective: Today we will learn how to find the perimeter and area of an irregular shape.
3.Each student removes one of their shoes.
4.Students look at their own foot and estimate the perimeter and area of their foot. Students write down their estimates.
5.Students will trace the shape of their foot on a piece of graph paper.
6.Students will take a piece of string and mark the exact length of the line they drew around their foot.Use the yard/meter stick to measure the string. This will be the perimeter measurement.
7.Students will count the number of squares (on the graph paper) that are included inside the tracing of their foot.Partial squares will count as 1/2 of a square. This will be the area measurement.
Additional Information
Measurements can be made in inches or centimeters. Corresponding graph paper should be used.
